(10) Hyakunin-bansho Guardhouse

Hyakuninbansho

This was the biggest guardhouse for inspection of visitors, who entered through Ote-mon Gate (main entrance) to the inner citadel in the Edo period.
The name of Hyakunin-bansho derived from the fact that one hundred samurai guardsmen were assigned to four groups: the Kogagumi, Negorogumi, Igagumi, and Nijugokigumi.
